Special election to fill Rep. Connolly’s seat in Congress officially set

He emphasized his family’s experience with the medical system — his mother was a nurse who lacked insurance until she qualified for Medicare — while presenting himself as a similarly fresh alternative to the party’s existing politics.

“The conveyor belt of career politicians don’t know how to fight,” Lee, who previously worked as a World Bank official and aide to Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker (R), said in his announcement video. “It’s time of the next generation of leaders who aren’t part of the elected class to step up and take action right now.”

Both Lee and Shin noted their backgrounds as the children of Korean immigrants, a trait that could help win over the district’s large Korean population, particularly in the Centreville and Annandale areas.

In an early preview of this crowded field in an area hit hard by Trump administration cuts to the federal workforce, both echoed other candidates in the race who called for shaking up the governing status quo […]
